A clear list to prepare your first motorhome trip: the vehicle, the paperwork, water, gas, loading and how to start with an easy route.
Setting off in a motorhome for the first time is exciting and a little daunting. Most first-trip problems can be avoided with good preparation. This list helps you not forget the essentials.
Before leaving home
- Paperwork: a driving licence suitable for your vehicle, registration documents, insurance and an up-to-date roadworthiness check. Check the date of each one.
- The vehicle: tyre pressure, oil and coolant levels, lights and wipers. If it has stood unused for a long time, have it checked.
- The leisure battery: it should be charged and working.
- The gas: check that the cylinder or tank has gas and that there are no leaks.
Load and weight
Check your vehicle's maximum authorised weight. With water, luggage and bikes it adds up fast. Spread the weight evenly, put heavy items near the axle and secure anything that can move.
Water
Fill the drinking-water tank before you leave or at your first service point. Check that the grey and black tanks are empty. Keep the hose and the adapter within reach.
For sleeping and cooking
- Bedding and an extra blanket.
- Basic kitchen tools, a tin opener and a first-aid kit.
- A torch and a small toolbox.
Choose an easy route
To begin with, plan a short route with few hours at the wheel and stops with services. It is better to arrive in daylight, so you can manoeuvre calmly and get to know the place. Book or confirm the stop in high season.
On the first day
- Stop early to check that everything is fine and nothing has shifted.
- Practise parking calmly, without hurry.
- Learn where the stopcocks, fuses and the electrical panel are.
Tips for a good start
- Do not overload: a lighter vehicle drives better.
- Know your heights: your vehicle is taller than a car; watch for bridges and barriers.
- Ask other travellers: almost all of them are happy to give advice.
